Newstead is situated 3.3 kilometers (2.1 miles) northeast of the central business district of Brisbane. It is bordered by Breakfast Creek to the north and the Brisbane River to the east.

Among the residents, 67.8% were born in Australia, slightly lower than the national average of 69.8%. Other notable countries of birth included England (4.4%), New Zealand (3.8%), the United States of America (1.9%), South Africa (1.3%), and Saudi Arabia (1.1%). The majority (81.6%) spoke only English at home, with Cantonese, Arabic, Persian (excluding Dari), Italian, and Spanish being the next most common languages. In terms of religious affiliation, the most prevalent responses in Newstead were No Religion (27.9%), Catholic (25.4%), Anglican (18.4%), Uniting Church (6.6%), and Presbyterian and Reformed (3.1%).

In the 2016 census, Newstead’s population increased to 2,193 individuals, with 49.4% identifying as male and 50.6% as female. Newstead does not have any schools within its boundaries. The closest primary schools are New Farm State School in New Farm and Ascot State School in Ascot. One of the highlights of the suburb is Newstead House, which holds the distinction of being Brisbane’s oldest standing residence. It was constructed in 1846 for Patrick Leslie, an early settler from the Darling Downs region. Nestled within beautiful grounds overlooking the creek’s mouth, the house is a short stroll away from the renowned Breakfast Creek Hotel, a striking Victorian building often described as ‘the very soul of Brisbane.’ Newstead House flourished during the tenure of Captain John Clements Wickham, a notable and gracious host who served as the official resident and magistrate of the Moreton Bay settlement. Wickham, who had previously commanded HMS Beagle and sailed alongside Charles Darwin, added to the house’s prestige. While there is an admission fee to explore the house, the gardens, now known as Newstead Park, are open to the public as a delightful parkland.
